About Me

Hi, and welcome to my blog.  Originally from Washington, DC, metro area, I have lived and worked in Japan for about 20 years. I was schooled in Journalism but am working in the Technology field. My hobbies are cooking, running, yoga, and photography. I also began learning saxophone a few years ago, but don’t practice nearly enough…

No, I am not a registered dietitian, but I have heaps of useful advice and encouragement to offer those considering eliminating meat and other animal products from their diets. Until age 44, I’m certain my diet consisted of more eggs, milk, and red meat than the average American’s. I ate lots of chicken, too (especially liked parts with skin), low-fat yogurt every morning, and loads of cheese.

While never especially overweight (I exercised regularly), no matter how much aerobic exercise I did, it seemed I couldn’t reduce my body fat, and my cholesterol was creeping up, too. I became concerned that my diet was increasing my chances for developing heart disease, cancer, or another major illness. Of course, we can never fully control anything, but I do feel now I’m doing everything possible to stay healthy. My cholesterol and body fat have dropped dramatically.

Although I have become increasingly aware and compassionate toward animals since giving up animal products, I prefer to think of vegan as a diet choice most of all. Achieving good health is all about behavior modification, and the less emotions are involved, the more flexibility there is to modify and improve your current diet habits gradually.

While a vegan diet may at first seem a sacrifice, I assure you it is not.  Therefore, if you are contemplating a vegan diet, don’t let anyone discourage you. Give it a try and I assure you, you will begin to feel healthy and youthful. Take it from me– paying attention to the foods you eat (and don’t eat) is the best way to maintain good health, and a vegan diet is a great way to begin.
